Mission:
Episode 0: The Redo/Coming Aboard
Location: Conference Room 6, Utopia Planitia Shipyards, Mars
Anjohl looked out the window seeing the ship getting her final touches done. Thinking to himself of what they had gone through in the last months. Many of his old crew moved on and found themselves into greater ventures. Matthew got a command, Loreni and Cody moved to a more stationary post to raise their family. It would be different. But good. His new Executive Officer and Second Officer would work just fine. Kurn would be stepping into Command, leaving the tactical console behind and Maerys would be stepping into command as well, but still working with her Forensic Sciences. He was glad that he would have two close friends and allies by his side.
He had left his children behind with their grandparents, Linata’s parents, on Earth. It was one of the hardest goodbyes he had ever had to say. It was for the best, he kept telling himself. Their last mission was almost too much for him to bear.
Turning around to the conference table, where those two officers sat he sat back down. Along with them, Master Chief Sori, his Chief of Boat, sat there. “What updates do you have for me? Has Starfleet sent crew replacements yet?”
Sophal waited a moment, incase the other wanted to speak first. The captain had looked her way so she spoke up. “Sir. A majority of the enlisted for engineering and operations are here, but upon their arrival, the yard pulled them into helping get the ship ready. As far as I know the enlisted for both science and medical should be here today or tomorrow. They were catching up on last minute training. And security? I'm not sure. I contacted one and they said they had orders from the new security chief to be at a class run by the commander.” She gestured to the Klingon. “But they said they would arrive on time.”
Nodding, Anjohl looked over at the woman, “Thank you Master Chief. Do you have positions filled? Or do we need to request more?”
“I believe we are good for engineering and operations. Security too.” The master Chief said. She looked to the commander who had been meeting with the enlisted as well.
“Most of the enlisted crew has already been accounted for, sir,” Kurn said in his basso, easily filling the conference room. “And most of the officers are en route, most of them are coming from posts across the Federation. And the Chief is correct, Lieutenant Yarr Kut did indeed attend this year’s Starfleet Advanced Tactical Training. Graduation is today.”
It was Kurn’s first year as an Instructor at S.A.T.T., having gone through the course himself almost seven years now. He found it to be a very rewarding experience and if he ever had any more down time like this last year, he would gladly do so again. But his first love was being on a starship. He was not ready to give up on the black, star filled night.
Nodding at the Klingon XO, “Good. I am assuming he has your endorsement then to be our Chief of Security?” Anjohl said leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table in front of him. He had flashbacks of the Romulan security officer that had challenged him to a duel a few years back. He quickly dismissed that officer and replaced her.
“Indeed,” Kurn said, his basso taking on a somewhat proud tone. “You could say I ‘whipped him into shape’, Captain. But truth be told, even as a Ferengi, he is both capable and has the heart of a Warrior.”
Here his tone softened and slowed seriously. “He is also armed with a significant amount of cunning and guile, which is something I might say is somewhat…” he paused for a second, then continued. “Lacking in most Starfleet Officers. He will be a boon to the ship and its crew, as I noted on his transfer orders, sir.” He said, looking at Anjohl, nodding once in approval as he slid over a small PADD.
The display was on, showing Yarr’s file and the approved transfer order for the XO of the Artemis, as well as his overall S.A.T.T. score of 96%. ‘Lieutenant Kut shows a propensity of using unorthodox methods of achieving tactical superiority that often achieve both primary, and secondary objectives, commonly using deception and evasion in engagements successfully.’
Looking at the scores, Anjohl was impressed. Like Bajorans, Ferengi were new to joining Starfleet. He had dealings with the Ferengi, and he found traditional ones kind of annoying. Though he did like spending time in Quarks at Deep Space 9. He had gotten quite good at Dabo for a time. “Thank you Kurn. This is helpful. We need someone who is able to think outside the box. This like those we will be hunting. I do want to meet him as soon as we are all on board.”
“You’re welcome, sir,” Kurn said, nodding his head once in acknowledgment. “I will arrange a meeting as soon as he is aboard.”
He had noticed that Maerys had been sitting quiet for a while. Anjohl turned and looked at her. “Mae? Status on forensics and the other sciences?”
She had been silently waiting her turn, thinking long thoughts, glad to be returning to her duty station. A small smile tugged at the edges of the Vulcan/Romulan hybrid woman’s lips. Anjohl and Jarex had spent the last year defending her against her third strike, as it were. The deal included her being put in charge of the criminal investigative services. Which just meant another level of bureaucracy heaped onto the ship.
How she had managed to gain rank and be given such responsibilities was still a mystery to the woman. What she had done, she had done for the ship and crew, but it had still been wildly out of bounds. The fact that Anjohl wasn’t ready for her head after she had them unceremoniously dumped on a desert planet, that he still trusted her enough to serve on his command team, surprised her. Though, she had sent backup for them, and that act had saved the non-Human species on board rather than having them shoved out of an airlock by the racist faction that had wormed its way onto the ship.
Still, she was grateful for her fellow officers working so diligently to save her career. Maerys Vandi looked at the captain and nodded, “Science and Forensics is well in hand and awaiting a few more crew members. There are slots open on the investigative team, but I’ve been assured that others will be sent.”
Anjohl nodded, “Good. Requests have been sent out. I am hoping Starfleet puts a priority on them, because we have an important job to do.” The Bajoran shifted in his seat and took a sip of the water glass in front of him. “How are you fitting into your new role?” He said to the Vulcan/Romulan that sat near him, “A little different from your forensics days.”
“I am...adapting. It is a bit more to deal with than running tests in the lab. I can’t help but feel that something is off. One more level of bureaucracy to wade through,” Mae answered, her gaze leveling on the captain. “But, it does give me access to a whole new level of investigators, as well as labs to play with. I suppose we shall see how things work out.”
Anjohl nodded, “Exactly. Nothing is preventing you from working in the lab either.” The Bajoran said with a smile. “I still want my best forensics officer doing what she does best.”
“Um, sir?” Sophal Sori had a nervous look on her face. “I hate to potentially bad mouth someone, but the shuttle bay manager is already on board. I only bring this up because she has a reputation and a nickname.”
Anjohl was confused by the COB’s comment. Raising an eyebrow at her, “Should we be concerned?” He asked the woman, “We have highly classified missions and we need the best and the brightest.”
“Sir, I'm not sure. When I spoke with Earth Stardock's command Chief, he said when she is on duty, she is one of the best. Her shuttlebay is rated as the best on the stardock. And that are many shuttlebays. And she is very protective of the craft she oversees.”
She paused for just a moment, then added. “Its her off duty lifestyle that has helped with her slow Advancement of rank. She is know as petty officer party cat. She has a love of being in big groups and the center of attention. She also has a thing for what humans call extreme sports. Rock climbing, white water rafting and other sports. But she does it live. No holodeck. And she pushes herself.”
“Interesting.” Anjohl said, rubbing his chin, “Well we will have to see how she does. We need to have the best of the best.” Having lived during the occupation of Bajor, he knew how it could have felt to have that adrenaline rush. “Keep an eye on her. We don’t need anyone distracted when we need them to be focused.”
“Understood, sir.” The master Chief said bowing her head slightly. As she looked back up, she gave the report of her other job. “I've got the new crews rooms assigned. I've been working with the quartermaster of the yard to make sure we have everything we need. We will be good to go before the refit is finished.”
“As long as she does not break any regulations,” Kurn said, his basso sounding firm, filling the conference room easily. “And her off duty life site does not disrupt the crew from working to the fullest capacity, I have no problem with what she does on her off hours. Captain, rest assured that I will take care of any issues should they arise.” This was Kurn’s first run as XO, so he would make sure there were none, and if it did happen, he would make sure to deal with it immediately.
The Captain nodded, “Thank you Chief.” He said, looking around the room. “Anything else for the good of the order?”
“No sir “ Sophal Sori replied.
“No,” Kurn said curtly, shaking his head once.
“Nothing further at this time, Sir,” Commander Vandi said after a short moment of pause.
Anjohl nodded around the table, “Great. Report back to your posts. Be back on the ship by tomorrow at 0600 hours. We need to make final preparations. You are dismissed.”
Kurn turned and headed out of the conference room, doors swooshing open then closed behind him. Soon they would be away from the dry dock and back out amongst the stars. Kurn was glad to be back aboard the Artemis and her crew, many of whom are his most trusted friends, and now as XO. He was ready for anything the universe decided to throw at them.
Mae stood and straightened her uniform, nodding respectfully to the other officers, before taking up her PADD and following Kurn out of the door. She had an entire department to sort out, and sighed as she looked over the added work. While the hybrid woman was well versed in science and labs, as well as the duties of security, the new department promised to be challenging for the well-experienced officer.
And it kept her mired in Starfleet’s dealings. They could keep an eye on her, keep her busy with nonsense, and hopefully avoid her going off the rails again. At least they had hope, even if it was misguided.
Sophal got up and headed for the door. She had much to do, both on and off the ship.
As the Bajoran watched the three of the most trusted personnel that he had ever worked with, his PADD beeped. As he pulled it out, he saw the Starfleet logo with an Admiral Priority one code flashing across it. “Computer seal the door, authorization Sengar Alpha 5410.” The computer authorized the door lock. Confirming his identification for the PADD, a message popped up from Admiral Tireem Joram. The Admiral who helped start the Artemis and her directive. He quickly read it and then stood to his feet. “Computer, unseal door.” Tapping his combadge, he called into it, “Commander Derling and Vandi. Change of plans. Meet me on the Artemis ASAP.” He moved out of the conference room and he hoped that he would intercept them on the way.
