Mission: Episode 0: The Redo/Coming Aboard
Location: USS Artemis

If the ship had been in the stardock, Yarr would have just walked on board. But with it floating in a drydock, this meant he had just one way over.

So he went to the Stardock's transporter. Well, one of them. As he went to the nearest one, he adjusted the strap to the bag over his shoulder. He was going to have the rest of his things sent over later. He knew he was a couple days early. But he wanted to be ready for his crew. He intended to meet them as they arrived.

Inside the room, it was packed. It seemed about twenty people were in front of him. He took His spot at the end of the line. Slowly moving as others beamed out.

He waited for the group in front of him to depart for Earth. Then He walked over to the transporter Chief and showed him the orders. “I'm bound for the Artemis. At the Utopia Planitia Shipyards. Could you make one of the command crew is there?”

“Ah, yes...sir?” The man looked at his collar, surprise in his voice. After a moment of checking, he nodded “Step on up, lieutenant. The captain and executive officer are both on board.”

“Thank you.” He said. Many people who met him were shocked he didn't sound like a Ferengi. Instead he had an Earth sounding accent.

A few moments later, a swirling light surrounded him. He could see the transporter room change as he stood there. A few moments later, he was standing on the Artemis' Transporter pad.

Kurn standing at parade rest before the pad, saw the transporter beam materialize in Transporter room 1, the matter stream solidifying into the yellow trimmed Starfleet uniform worn by the Ferengi. A similar uniform color that Kurn had recently changed to that of command red. It was somewhat of an odd feeling stepping away from the Sec/Tac console when the ship was set to return to active duty. Now he was XO. It was almost hard to believe, but here he was. And he would do the best job possible.

Next to the hulking Klingon in a Starfleet uniform, stood the captain of the ship. He was the same height as the Klingon, but about 90 pounds lighter. The Bajoran watched as a Ferengi in the black and grey uniform with a gold undershirt.

Anjohl stood more relaxed than his Klingon counterpart, but nonetheless a commanding presence. He took a step forward towards the Ferengi, “Welcome aboard Lieutenant. I am Captain Sengar Anjohl, CO. This is my XO, Commander Kurn Derling.”

“Lieutenant,” Kurn said, his deep voice easily filling the transporter room. “Good to see you again.”

The Ferengi snapped to attention. “Hello Captain. And Hello again, Commander. I'm Lieutenant Yarr, reporting for duty. Permission to come aboard?”

“Permission granted, Lieutenant.” Anjohl said, greeting the Ferengi, “At ease. Welcome aboard the Artemis. I assume your travel here was uneventful.”

Yarr nodded, he relaxed a bit and stepped off the pad. “Very much so. Been on Earth Now for a few months, finishing up some extra courses I wished to cover, plus my bridge officers test. Actually be happy to leave.”

“I heard you did really well on your S.A.T.T. score. According to Commander Derling.” The Bajoran nodded towards his first officer.

“I did find it a bit challenging and very...shall we say, informative. I have some new ideas I wish to work with.” Yarr replied

“He did well,” the Klingon hybrid said, folding his arms across his large chest, a bit of pride coming through his voice. “I took him ‘under my wing’ as it were, and worked him just that much harder. There were a few times that I thought he might falter, or break but… he did not. That in itself is an accomplishment.”

“Thank you sir. I've been giving It my all to get to this point.” Yarr was always worried that his adopted parents had something to do with his advances. So he pushed himself. Of course this ruled out dating and much of a personal life. And he had put his own life on the line, many times, and would do it for the people he cared about. He also knew many people were not happy with him being a Ferengi. But he stood out. He wasn't ruled by wealth. And honestly he couldn't even recite one of the rules of acquisition if he tried.

“That’s good. We need the best of the best here.” Captain Sengar said, acknowledging the Commander’s statement.

“I am curious. What is this ships directive. I was told it's not deep space explorer.” Yarr ask the two men.

The Bajoran captain chuckled, “That is true. You are going to be a very valuable asset to us. Commander Derling here, was our previous Security Chief, so you are going to have some large shoes to fill. Literally and metaphorically.” Anjohl chuckled. Then collected himself, “Our directive? We are hunting down dangerous criminals, so you will have to make sure your brigs are top notch. You will work closely with Commander Derling and Commander Maerys Vandi, who is our Chief of SCIS.”

“Good to know. I think some of the brig crew was on the ship before. But I'll make sure they operate At the top of their game, sirs. I do have some requirements for the new officers and enlisted of Security. Making sure they are proficient in phasers and hand to hand. That kind of thing. Is there any requirements you have?”

Anjohl nodded, “Very good. Just everything that is on the ship is classified, which should have been told to you and any new crewman when you are offered the assignment.”

“They did sir.” Yarr replied.

“What I did on my first tours as Chief Sec/Tac,” Kurn started, his basso taking on an almost instructional tone that Yarr was now quite familiar with. “I started holodeck scenarios with all of my former departmental staff. Repelling borders, boarding other craft, holding a secured position, securing a prisoner, etc. That way, you get an assessment of your staff’s capabilities, both individually and as a group. Note those who are both well trained and those who need help, then work your way into making a Security/Tactical department that is where you want them to be.”

Reaching into his left thigh pocket with his left hand, he pulled out a small PADD, hit a few buttons on its surface and walked toward Yarr, holding it out towards him.

“These were my training scenarios for Security/Tactical on the holodeck,” said Kurn, handing him the PADD, then stepping back to stand next to the Captain once more. “I have every scenario possible programmed into my holodeck training programs; some familiar because they were pulled from real events, others were of my making. Use them as you see fit. Modify them to fill your needs. The Captain and I trust you, Yarr. You were chosen to be on the Artemis because we both know you will be up to the task.”

“Having Commander Derling’s personal recommendation holds a lot of weight with me.” Glancing at the Klingon, “I hope you are as good as you both claim.” The Bajoran captain, gave the Klingon a quick wink.

“I can only say that I plan to continue working as hard as I have been.” Yarr stated.

The right side of Kurn’s mouth curled into a slight smile at Anjohl’s teasing, then back to its natural position before he spoke. “I am confident that he will perform adequately, Captain. If not, we can always ship him back to Ferenginar.” The right side of his mouth curled back into a smile, this time for both the Captain and Yarr.

Kurn very well knew that Yarr was raised on a starship and on Betazed and like himself, was not native to the Capital of the Federation, having been born on Qo’nos. It wasn’t until he was two years old that he lived on Earth leaving at ten to be raised back on the Klingon Homeworld. At eighteen he returned and enrolled in Starfleet Academy. The rest is history.

“Actually my old crewmates kept saying I needed to go to Risa and loosen up.” Yarr admitted. “I'd rather go somewhere exciting.”

Kurn displayed one of his rare full smiles then said, “I hear going to Risa is a good time. Make sure you grab a statuette and display it openly and often. Supposedly, their oo-mox is second to none.”

Anjohl chuckled, “I promised my wife that we would go to Risa on our next vacation.” He shrugged, “It’s nice and warm there at least.” He winked at Kurn.

“I still have not been,” Kurn said, his basso sounding matter of fact, almost nonchalant. “Shall we head to the bridge, or maybe your ready room sir?” Kurn’s voice took on a more serious tone as he motioned to the doors and corridor beyond.

“Agreed.” Anjohl said waving his hand in the direction of the door. “Let’s head to the bridge. I am sure the Lieutenant would like to see his station on the bridge. The Bajoran said in a captainly tone.

“Lead the way, sirs. This will be the newest ship I've ever been on.” Yarr was being honest. The Harbinger had been an excelsior class, and his parents ship had been a constellation class. “I also want to check the security and Tactical office. Plus the other spots under my care.”

“Don’t forget the CIC; It is the heart of Sec/Tac.” Kurn said as he headed towards the door out of the transporter room, his deep voice easily heard over his shoulder. “It is all your domain now. I trust we will be leaving it in good hands.” With that, the doors of the transporter room swished<\i> open and closed as they passed, leaving the transporter operator to his duties.

“I will do As i always have. Give it my best.” He knew that by being the second Ferengi in the fleet, even after a decade, all eyes were still on him. Which had helped him with his drive to be the best.

Anjohl smiled, “That’s what I like to hear, Lieutenant.” The Captain and the two officers moved out the door and in the corridor. The three entered the nearest turbolift, and moved up one deck to Deck 7. Within a few minutes, they were standing in front of a an office that was labeled, “Chief Security & Tactical Officer”. Anjohl pressed the button and the door opened, “We will get your name on the door. The Quartermaster is getting to it when she can.”

“I'm moving up in the universe.” Yarr stated. He looked about the room. He hadn't had his own office before. Not that he planned to use it often. Plus his name on the door wasn't all that important. Afterall what counted was the job he did and how well he did it. “How many of my crew will be fresh out of the Academy or bootcamp? And how many were on the ship before?”

Turning to Kurn, “Commander? I am not sure about the question, do you know?” Anjohl asked his XO.

“None,” Kurn replied immediately, shaking his head once. “I wanted to make sure that the entire Security and Tactical department was completely filled with experienced operators. After our last…” here he hesitated for a second, then continued. “Outing… most of the Sec/Tac department was accounted for, surprisingly. Only 6 were new transfers.”

“No wonder most took the order for extra training without a problem.” Yarr said as he looked about the room. “They should be here soon. I'll start drills When they arrive. After all, I'm one of the newest cogs in the machine.”

“Everyone in the department,” Kurn said as he looked around his old office, memories flashing in his mind’s eye of the many hours he spent between this office and the Sec/Tac console on the bridge. “Does split shifts between Security duties of the ship and in the CIC. Outside of the bridge, it is one of the most secured areas of the ship, along side Main Engineering and the Intelligence Hub, down below on deck 9.”

Turning, the XO walked out of the Chief Sec/Tac’s office and out into the CIC, the many holoscreens dark seeing as the ship was still in dry dock.

“Here,” Kurn’s basso filled the large area easily as he continued, walking past the many consoles of the CIC. “All Command in Control functions take place for all away team operations as well as coordination between Starfleet Command, other Starfleet vessels, and any possible allied forces during combat actions. This space is shared with Strategic Operations who staff the CIC at all times and with the Hub. You will be working closely with several key departments aboard the ship.”

Kurn then turned to face them, placing one hand on the back of a nearby chair. “Take good care of it.” It could almost be said that the large Klingon/Human hybrid sounded… sentimental.

He all of a sudden came back to himself, lowering his hand awkwardly, a single rumble in his throat as he cleared it. “I personally trained you this past year to be my replacement, alongside your S.A.T.T. training. I know you have worked hard and learned many things along the way. I know you won’t let us down, Yar.”

The ferengi nodded. “Yes sir.” after all what more could be said that wasn't just bluster and ego pumping. Actions mattered. Not words.

Anjohl nodded, “Commander Derling has great faith in you Lieutenant. You have big shoes to fill. No pun intended.”

“I understand,” Yarr stated. He had a growing list of things to do forming in his head. And he wanted to start soon.

“Good,” said the XO, nodding once. “We will let you get to it then. Several other meetings to get to before departure.” He turned and faced Anjol. “With your permission sir.” He waited a moment to get confirmation and then walked out of the CIC.

Yarr turned Away. Looking about the room. This role would be a lot of work. But he felt ready. He needed to start with drills as soon as his crew arrived

Anjohl smiled at the Ferengi, “Welcome aboard Lieutenant. I am looking forward to serving with you. I will let you get settled. Let us know if you need anything.” The Bajoran captain smiled and turned out of the CIC and headed to his next meeting.
